LE GRAND CHU
French soldier guards the royal palace in Luang Prabang, 1950s. | Pierre Pigneau de Behaine was a French Catholic priest best known for his role in assisting Nguyễn Ánh (later Emperor Gia Long) to establish the Nguyễn Dynasty in Vietnam after the Tây Sơn rebellion. | The feudal mechanism of power – the church – acted as an entrepreneurial mechanism for fusing French and Vietnamese culture. What started with sharing language and a few deals ended up creating an entirely new culture. No one who thinks of Vietnamese people in Australia thinks they are partially French – but many are deeply entwined with that colonial history. Episcopal Seal of Pierre Pigneau de Behaine | Research has also shown a great many pop and movie stars from Indochina who sing in French and are clearly part of that culture.
