Pierre Pigneau de Behaine was a French Catholic priest best known for his role in assisting Nguyễn Ánh (later Emperor Gia Long) to establish the Nguyễn Dynasty in Vietnam after the Tây Sơn rebellion.
The feudal mechanism of power – the church – acted as an entrepreneurial mechanism for fusing French and Vietnamese culture. What started with sharing language and a few deals ended up creating an entirely new culture. No one who thinks of Vietnamese people in Australia thinks they are partially French – but many are deeply entwined with that colonial history. Prince Canh: In 1785, at the age of five, Nguyễn Phúc Cảnh accompanied the French Catholic Father Pigneau de Béhaine to France in order to sign a treaty of alliance between France and Vietnam, the 1788 Treaty of Versailles.
Emperor Kai Dinh, was the 12th Emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty in Vietnam, reigning from 1916 to 1925. enacted a policy of close collaboration with the French government and was effectively a puppet political figurehead for the French colonial rulers, following all of their instructions to give "legitimacy" to French policies.

Research has also shown a great many pop and movie stars from Indochina who sing in French and are clearly part of that culture. We forget about this aspect of the Indochina story when we think of Vietnamese boat people. Cocochine plans to sensitively integrate this into the narrative.
